Message from the Program Director:
San Joaquin General Hospital Surgery Residency Program has been in existence since 1948 and offers a wide diversity of clinical and operative experience. The Residents are provided a thorough experience in the diagnosis and operative management of a large number of patients. They obtain substantial clinical and operative experience because we are a small county hospital and offer a vast experience in hands-on training. Residents in our program rotate at four hospitals; San Joaquin General Hospital, St. Joseph’s Medical Center of Stockton, which are located 10 miles of each other, Lodi Memorial Hospital (Lodi), and the University of California Davis Medical Center (Sacramento). The Surgery Residency Program is fully accredited by the Accredited Council Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and matches 3 categorical and 2 preliminary positions through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) and has a total of 17 residents (3-3-3-3-5); it is a unique program in that you will have tremendous exposure to interesting cases and hands-on operative experience. The average operative experience is over 1,200 in the past five years. This is well above the American Board of Surgery requirement of 750 cases. Our program's American Board of Surgery Qualifying Exam first time pass rate is 100% over the past 13 years from 2002-2015. We were also one in three programs in the United States to have a 100% Certifying Exam pass rate for five consecutive years, 2008-2013 (see report) at American Board of Surgery Program Summary Pass Rate.
